Mercey Hot Springs
Mercey Hot Springs flows at a scalding 119°F, among California's hottest springs, located in the remote Little Panoche Valley west of Fresno. Once developed as a resort, this thermal feature sits in one of the state's least-populated regions, nearly 60 miles from the nearest city and accessible via unmarked backcountry roads.
The spring emerges at 1,212 feet elevation in rolling, semi-arid grassland dotted with oak and scattered shrubs. The warm mineral water creates a small oasis in otherwise dry terrain; the setting is quietly beautiful rather than dramatic—open sky, sparse vegetation, and a sense of profound isolation characterize the landscape.
Mercey (formerly spelled Mercy) represents a historical resort that drew visitors through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, though little remains of those improvements today. The 55.2-degree temperature differential above the 63.8°F ambient climate reflects deep circulation of groundwater through heated bedrock. The name likely derives from an early settler.
Access requires navigating unmarked roads through private and public lands; route-finding requires local knowledge or detailed maps. Spring through early summer offers best conditions; rough roads may be impassable during heavy rains. This is decidedly remote—bring water, fuel, and supplies.
